Wet weather requires some simple adjustments for drivers

Rain is a possibility at any time of the year here in Mississippi. However, it seems as though some drivers still haven’t learned to make the necessary adjustments to safely navigate the roads in wet weather. You can’t control what other drivers do. However, you can take steps to keep yourself and your passengers safe and be prepared when you encounter unsafe drivers.

Keep your car well-maintained

Safety begins before you get in the car. Be sure that all your lights and signals are working and that your windshield wipers are clean and functioning. These precautions will help ensure that you can see and be seen by those around you.

Be sure that your tires aren’t worn and are properly inflated. Even a little water on the road can be hazardous if your tires aren’t in good shape.

Stay at or below the speed limit

The more water there is on the road, the more you need to slow down. This will help you stay a safe distance behind other drivers who may come to a sudden stop or lose control. It will also help prevent hydroplaning if you drive through standing water.

Turn off the cruise control

In wet weather, you need to be in control of your vehicle every second. When the cruise control is on, drivers tend to get complacent and take their foot off the brake and accelerator. You need to be ready to respond in a split-second to the unexpected.

Wet weather does not remove drivers of liability if their recklessness or negligence causes a crash. If you are injured in a crash caused by another driver who wasn’t driving appropriately for the weather conditions, find out what your legal options are for seeking compensation to cover your medical bills and other expenses and damages.
