The thought of a medical misdiagnosis is enough to keep you up at night. With this going through your mind, you may always have questions about whether or not you are in good health.

The best thing you can do to protect yourself is choose a reputable medical professional, while also keeping a close eye on what he or she is doing.

Unfortunately, even with the best intentions, a serious condition could be misdiagnosed. Here is a list of common conditions that are misdiagnosed by medical professionals:

  • Heart attack. With clear symptoms, you would assume that this condition would never be missed. However, there are times when a heart attack is mistaken for indigestion or another less serious ailment.
  • Cancer. A cancer misdiagnosis is a big deal, as the longer you wait to receive treatment the more difficult it is to beat the disease. Some types of cancer are more prone to a misdiagnosis, including colorectal, breast and lung.
  • Stroke. There are many symptoms of a stroke; however, these are shared with other ailments. Subsequently, in the event of a slow onset stroke, a misdiagnosis could happen.

These are just a few of the many conditions that are often misdiagnosed, thus leading to more trouble for the patient.

If you find yourself in this position, you must immediately locate another medical professional who can take over your care and make sure you’re taking the right approach.

From there, learn why your original team misdiagnosed your condition. Also, pay attention to your legal rights and whether you can take action against the negligent party.
