As a pedestrian, you realize that you may be in close proximity to moving vehicles. This holds true even if you are walking on a sidewalk.

While you hope to avoid trouble, in the back of your mind you know that you could be part of an accident at some point.

Since the result of a car-pedestrian accident is often serious injury or death, you want to avoid this at all costs.

Here are some pedestrian safety tips that can help you avoid an accident:

  • Make yourself visible. There are many ways of doing so, such as by wearing bright colored clothing (especially at night). Also, do your best to make eye contact with drivers whenever you can. This gives them a clear idea of your intentions.
  • Avoid distractions. Just the same as drivers, you don’t want to become distracted when walking. For instance, texting and walking could lead to a situation in which you cross the street without looking both ways.
  • Follow the rules of the road. Drivers have a set of rules and so do pedestrians. An example of this would be waiting for the proper signal before crossing the road at an intersection.
  • Stay off the street. When walking, you should do your best to use a sidewalk at all times. If you need to walk on the shoulder of the road, make sure you are facing traffic.

These are just a few of the many pedestrian safety tips you can follow to avoid trouble.

Unfortunately, even if you do these things you could still be part of an accident. For example, this could happen if a driver veers off the road and onto the sidewalk.

If a vehicle strikes you, don’t attempt to move from the scene. Instead, do whatever it takes to get an ambulance to the scene as quickly as possible.

After you receive treatment and have a clear idea of your prognosis, it’s time to learn more about the accident. This is also a time for you to focus on your legal rights and whether you can seek compensation from the negligent party.
