The thought of being involved in a car accident is enough to make your stomach sink. While this is a bad situation to find yourself in, there are steps you can take to make things a little bit easier on yourself. Here are five things you absolutely need to do:

— Remain at the scene of the accident. You should never leave the scene of a crash until you speak with the other party. In many cases, you’ll want to wait for the police to arrive.

— Conduct a health check. Your health is more important than anything else, so check on this before you exit your vehicle.

— Call for help. In addition to the police, you may want to call for an ambulance. The sooner you receive medical treatment the better.

— Exchange information. If you are able to do so, exchange information with the other party. This isn’t a time to discuss the details of the accident. Simply exchange information and then let your insurance company handle things from there.

— Learn more about your legal rights. Depending on the cause of the accident, you may be able to seek compensation from the other party.

When you know what to do after a car accident, you’ll find it much easier to keep a level head during this challenging time.

As you receive treatment, work closely with your medical team to regain your former level of health. Along with this, you should fully understand your legal rights, as you don’t want to miss out on any compensation that is due to you.
