Do these things to drive safely in heavy rain

In the state of Mississippi, you know that heavy rain can move into your area at any time. If you find yourself behind the wheel as the rain begins to pour, it’s important to adjust your approach as to ensure a higher level of safety.

Here are some of the many things you can do to drive safely in heavy rain:

— Use your windshield wipers. It goes without saying that you should put your wipers on at the first sign of rain.

— Slow down. You never want to drive too fast in the rain, as this increases the chance of hydroplaning.

— Leave more time to reach your destination. If you are in a hurry, you may find yourself taking risks in less than ideal weather conditions. Give yourself extra time to reach your destination.

— Turn your lights on. Visibility can be low when it’s raining. Use your lights so you can see the road ahead and to alert other drivers as to your whereabouts.

— Leave more space. Don’t travel in close proximity to other vehicles unless it is absolutely necessary.

Doing these things can help keep you safe when driving in the rain, but it’s no guarantee that other drivers will do the same.

If you are involved in an accident, call for immediate help. A police officer can take control of the scene, while an ambulance can help treat you and others for injuries.

Once you are stabilized and are ready to look toward the future, learn more about the cause of the accident and your legal rights.
