Take special care when driving in rush hour traffic

When you take to the road before or after work, you realize that you may find yourself in heavy traffic. Even if this is something you expect, there's a good chance it will frustrate you nonetheless.

Driving in rush hour traffic means many things, including the fact that you must keep your eyes on the road at all times. Just because traffic has slowed doesn't mean you can fall prey to distractions, such as sending text messages or horsing around with passengers.

There are many things you can do to take special care when driving in rush hour traffic. These five tips are a good place to start:

  • Leave more time in your schedule: If possible, try to leave a few minutes in advance if you know you'll face rush hour traffic. This will help avoid a situation in which you're in a hurry. It can also eliminate some of the stress from your day.
  • Search for the safest route: If you're concerned about your safety on a particular route, possibly due to the traffic, find another way to reach your destination.
  • Watch your following distance: Driving too closely to the vehicle in front of yours is a mistake, as you may not be able to stop in time should you need to do so in a hurry.
  • Don't daydream: This is easy to do when traffic is slow and you know you'll be in your vehicle for awhile. When you daydream you're not paying attention to the road and other vehicles.
  • Stay where you are: Maybe you're in the left lane and realize that the right lane is moving faster. So, you make a quick change in the hope of saving time. Of course, you then find that the traffic in the left lane is moving ahead. It's tempting to move from lane to lane, but it increases the risk of a crash.

Even if you've avoided trouble in the past, there's a good chance you've witnessed at least one rush hour traffic accident.

If you ever find yourself in this position, don't panic. By calling 911, you won't have to wait long for help to arrive.

Once you receive treatment, consult with your insurance agent and revisit the details of the accident. Doing these things will help you decide which steps to take next, all with the idea of protecting your legal rights as a driver.
