Authorities: Driver in crash that killed 4-year-old was drunk

It's been three months since the crash that killed a 4-year-old and injured his 6-year-old sister and mother. The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) has now revealed that the driver who allegedly ran a stop sign in Sunflower County and struck the vehicle carrying the Arkansas family tested "positive for alcohol" in toxicology tests. Photos of the SUV show that the front end was completely crumpled.

The 24-year-old mother and her two young children were on a trip to visit family members who live in Florida when the fatal crash occurred.

The precise blood alcohol content (BAC) of the 22-year-old man was not disclosed. An MHP spokesman confirmed only that it was above the legal limit of .08. So far, he has not been arrested or charged with a crime. The MHP spokesman says that a grand jury will review the evidence when they convene in November and decide whether criminal charges are warranted.

Meanwhile, the family is back home in Arkansas working to heal physically and emotionally from the May 5 crash. The children's mother was seriously injured in the crash and said that her grief over the loss of her young son is increasing rather than decreasing. The children's grandmother says, "I pray every day that justice gets served."

Families who have lost a loved one in a senseless crash caused by a drunk or reckless driver want to see that driver held accountable by the criminal justice system. However, regardless of the outcome there, grieving families have the right to seek compensation in the Mississippi civil court as well.
