How can you drive safely in dense fog?

As a Mississippi resident, you should never be surprised when the weather takes a turn for the worse. For example, you could be driving down the road with no problems, only to find yourself in the middle of a dense fog bank.

Driving safely in foggy conditions is easier said than done, as your visibility can be greatly reduced. If you find yourself in this situation, there are critical safety tips you should follow.

  • Eliminate all distractions, as you need to be 100 percent focused on the road (as always)
  • Reduce your speed, as your visibility won’t be as good as you would like
  • Use your headlights but not your high beams
  • Use the lane lines to guide you, especially if you are unable to see far in front of your vehicle
  • Use defrosters to reduce the amount of moisture on your windshield
  • Leave more space between your vehicle and others (as other drivers are also having a difficult time seeing)

If you’re unable to navigate the fog in a safe manner, pull your vehicle into a parking lot. You don’t want to simply move to the side of the road, as this could result in an accident if other vehicles are unable to see you.

If you are part of an accident as the result of inclement weather, try your best to move to safety. From there, call 911 and wait for help to arrive.

In the event of an injury, you’ll want to receive medical attention and continue to follow the guidance of your doctors.
