Top tips for avoiding distracted driving

With so many laws in place, it's hard to imagine that distracted driving remains a major problem throughout every state in the country.

As a driver, regardless of the vehicle type, you need to do your part in keeping the roads safe. This means many things, such as focusing on the road in front of you at all times.

If you have yet to consider the many ways to avoid distracted driving, now is the time to adjust your thinking and make some changes when you get behind the wheel. Here are some of the many tips you can follow:

  • Turn off your cellphone and put it out of reach, such as in the glove box or trunk
  • Make sure other passengers are familiar with the dangers of distracted driving, so that they don't do anything that takes your attention away from the task at hand
  • Be sure all kids and pets are in a good position before you put the car in drive
  • Never attempt to eat or drink while you are behind the wheel
  • Program your GPS and radio before you hit the road

When you do these types of things, it's much easier to prevent distractions that could lead to an accident.

You don't have to take your eyes off the road for a long period of time in order to cause an accident. Even if you only look at your phone for a single second, it increases the likelihood of a crash.

Watch for others

Although you may be devoted to avoiding distracted driving at all costs, you should never assume that other drivers are taking the same approach. There is a good chance that someone else won't be paying attention to what is going on.

As you watch for others, don't be afraid to keep your distance from those who don't appear to be paying attention. For instance, if you see a person texting, do whatever it takes to keep a safe distance.

If you are part of an accident with a distracted driver, you should move your car to safety, call 911, and let police deal with the person in the appropriate manner.

In the event of an injury, you should also seek immediate medical attention. All of this will eventually lead you to a situation in which you learn more about your legal rights for seeking compensation.
