There are many ways to spot a drunk driver

Every year, drunk driving accidents impact thousands of people throughout the state of Mississippi. Some of these people suffer a serious injury. In other cases, this type of accident leads to a fatality.

As a driver, you know how important it is to be 100 percent sober when you get behind the wheel. You should also remember this: Other people don't always take the same level of caution, meaning that they may decide to drink and drive.

While there is nothing you can do about this, there are some steps you can take to help improve your ability to keep your distance from these drivers.

Here are some of the top signs that a person is driving drunk:

-- Quickly accelerating or decelerating

-- Driving too closely to other vehicles, such as those in front of them

-- Weaving in and out of traffic with no regard for other drivers

-- Striking objects, such as a sign or parked vehicle

-- Signaling that is inconsistent with the moves that the person makes

-- Swerving

-- Driving extremely slow or extremely fast

-- Making illegal turns

-- Driving the wrong way on a one way street

-- Driving without headlights during nighttime hours

If you spot a driver partaking in one or more of these behaviors, there is a good chance that the person is under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

There are two things you should do at this point:

-- Keep your distance as to improve your safety

-- Contact police so they can get the person off the road

Even if you're careful about driving in close proximity to drunk drivers, you never know if something could go wrong. After all, you can't point out all of these people at all times.

If you are involved in an accident with a drunk driver, seek immediate medical attention. Along with this, don't wait to learn more about the cause of the accident.

By consulting with a personal injury attorney, you can also learn more about your legal rights. If you were injured in the accident, you may be able to receive compensation from the negligent party. With the right legal team on your side, you can be confident in every decision that you make.
